A Manosphere Convention?

One of our friends sent me a link to the “Make Women Great Again” convention. The “mansplaining event of the century.” To be fair, we are both wondering if this is one of those brilliant left wing hoaxes that exposes the darker side of the right. But it looks pretty real to me.

It is outrageous in so many ways. Including the masterful use of all the best known ways to sell snake oil on the internet. But I’m writing about it here because of all the ways it appeals to the way patriarchy lives within us.

There is a sense that something “manly” is being lost. And that “something” can only exist in relationship to women being a certain a way. There is deep underlying narrative about the order of things. It is a story that can give men a sense of purpose, power and place. What are men left with as patriarchy comes into  question? As white supremacy comes into question? As our national story comes into question?

We need a better story. A better way to find our place. New ways of enacting conscious masculinity. But in order to do this, it is important to take a close look at what it is we think is being lost. And at all the ways in which we might still feel our attachment to it.

Take another look at this “convention.” Examine yourself. Uncensored. What are the ways in which it could appeal to you? To men you know? What is the gap that they are trying to fill?
