The Warriors of our Boyhood

Not all boys are the same. It is possible that you were not a kid that was fascinated by the heroic warrior. If so, it will be interesting to consider how you did relate to the archetype as it showed up in the world around you.

I certainly was captivated by the archetype. And I can see the way my son is similarly moved by it. If this is also true for you, take a moment to bring yourself back to your childhood encounters with the warrior. Who were the warriors that captured your imagination? What was so captivating? How did it impact your view of yourself? How did you imagine yourself as a warrior?

What does the warrior archetype evoke in your being?

I was blessed to grow up in Puerto Rico reading black and white serial comicbooks. My warrior heroes included a Yogi devoted to Kali, a Mayan prince who was also a fugitive, a North American Indigenous eagle warrior, a Samurai and, perhaps most significant, the heroes of the Haitian revolution, including a man who was born a slave to become a king.

The archetype had many shapes, but the there was an essence to the warrior, a way of holding himself before adversity, a way to contend with his own fear, a way to stand for something greater than himself.

Let’s talk about the warrior tonight.

I’m looking forward to it.
