When We Fight We Win
Last week I had the privilege of facilitating a unique gathering of movement actors. They are the protagonists of “When We Fight We Win!” a soon to be released book about the social movements that are shaping the 21st century. The book is more than a book. It is an art object. It is a cultural expression of our contemporary demand for liberation. You can pre-order this piece of art now.
It is pretty incredible to sit in a room and be in dialogue with people who have devoted their entire lives to anti-colonial struggles, the emancipation of black people, the abolition of prisons, the restoration of our planet, migrant rights, queer rights, the promise of economic justice, cultural work, the fundamental importance of joy and pleasure… it was a truly remarkable intersection. It was not a space devoid of contradictions but it was a space that honored the primacy of relationship.
It was our second such gathering. Last year we gathered to write the final chapter of the book. This year we gathered to plan an art and book tour that will amplify the work of each of these movements. You want to be a part of that!
It was uniquely special for me because the gathering was in Puerto Rico, where I was born. We left the island when I was 12 years old. It was powerful to come back as the person that I have become. I could not believe that I was in Puerto Rico facilitating a group of leaders from the social movements that I have devoted my life to.
This is the time that we have been waiting for, something big is brewing. It includes conflict and a struggle for power. But it is also pregnant with the future that we seek. It is marked by passion, commitment and art, and it is evolving as consciousness and culture. Let’s stay together. When We Fight We Win.
