Tonight: Men Talk About Abortion
Slavery would not have been abolished without a movement of white abolitionists.
Bodies cannot be dominated by the state.
It is a woman’s right to have full and complete say over her body.
The right to abortion is often presented as a woman’s issue.
We, as men who are striving to be better, must therefore get clear about our role at a time when these rights have been taken away.
I grew up in a deeply Catholic community of very beautiful and loving people who remain convinced that a pregnant woman must not have a right to determine whether she gives birth or not.
I have also done a lot of healing work with women who carry pain, and trauma, about their abortions.
I understand that this is a question that is deeper and more complex than the simplistic political sound bites of a polarized society.
And I also know that men are impacted by abortion. In all kinds of ways.
Tonight we’ll have some time to hear masculine stories of abortion. And to bring our own stories to bear. We want to create a space that allows us to contend with the complexities of these choices and the importance of this right.
And we want to seriously consider what is ours to do in these times.
I look forward to seeing you tonight.
Don’t hesitate to invite friends who are similarly concerned and similarly committed to showing up better as men.
Abrazos,
Gibrán
