I’m interviewing adrienne maree brown!
adrienne maree brown published a new book: “Fables and Spells” and, yes! It IS magical!
I get to interview her Wednesday, November 16, at 7PM EST. You can register with this link at the bottom of the Odyssey Bookstore event page.
Chani Nicholas calls adrienne “a force of nature, a stream of wisdom and an oracle for our time.” She is also an old friend. I remember our many early conversations trying to figure out how to work with complexity and what Emergency Strategy actually is. And WOW! Did she nail that one!
It was also adrienne’s essay: relinquishing the patriarchy, that inspired me to launch the Better Men Project. You can imagine that I was beyond excited when my friends at Odyssey Bookshop asked if I would interview her about her latest book, a collection of short poetry and fiction and a treasure trove of spells.
I think of adrienne as one of those prophetic voices that is able to speak in an ancient mythopoetic language. The tongue that helps our souls find meaning as we return home to ourselves.
She is helping us get our magic back. And if you follow @adriennemareebrown on instagram you get a beautiful glimpse of how deeply human she is, how funny, imperfectly perfect, wise and sweet she can be.
adrienne was Krista Tippet’s last guest on “On Being.” Speaking to the New York Times, she says that adrienne is
one of these people who I think is the evolution of our species. She’s queer, she’s biracial and she is deep in what she calls “emergent strategy.”
She’s an example of something that I’m watching now: We are learning about the true nature of vitality, which is modeled on the natural world. It’s ecosystem-based. It’s not hierarchy-based. It’s about mutuality and reciprocity. It’s almost as if there are parallel universes. There’s the universe of our addiction to Amazon and of the people who are building spaceships to Mars — and then there’s this wild, fertile, imaginative but also pragmatic world of rethinking success and vitality and reality. It’s an incredible time to be alive. It’s terrible in a lot of ways and also full of unbelievable possibilities.
In Fables and Spells adrienne speaks of witching. She says that:
witching is about putting our attention behind our intentions. And being willing to invite and shape the unseen forces of the world (which go by many names and beyond all comprehensible names) to align with the highest good for ourselves and the whole.
I can’t imagine a better person to be talking to the week after a national election. Join us on the 16th, this is going to be a good one.
Remember to register, and send me a note if you know you are coming!

Gibrán
